I have just been given a second hand Nokia phone and the envelope (message sign)

keeps on flashing? I have a Nokia n86 8mp mobile phone I have the message envelope sign flashing and i have cleared all my messages,inbox,folders,mailbox and so on there is nothing in any of the folders it's all empty but it keeps on flashing has anybody got any ideas how i can cancel this please .....Thank you
