i have a jeep cherokee and when you go down the road the transmission will not shift right and also when u stop it idles at like 1500 rpm, when i checked the oil it looked really thin. what could be causing the problem?

You need to specify if it's a 5 speed or auto. But do check to see if your clutch has fluid leaking on it, it will affect your shifting. I would suggest also changing the tranny fluid and the filter (if auto), it should smooth it out unless you have a real problem. Also keep in mind auto tranny fluid is relatively thin compared to the 5 speed gear oil. The auto fluid should be bright red and have the consistency of olive oil. The 5 speed fluid is more like syrup and will be almost dark green. As for the idle speed, fix it by using the screw that touches the throttle cable. It's behind the throttle body and very easy to find.
