...goldfish the water gets so dirty? We have a 21 litre fish tank which have a couple of danios and another couple of small cold water fish. A couple of months ago we bought 3 fantail goldfish. The tank was fine before and I only changed the water about once a month. Now the goldfish are in the water gets very dirty quickly and needs changed at least once a week. The water is a yellow greenish colour and the surface of the tank if slimy. It's driving me mad as it looks awful. Can I buy another fish that might help keep the tank clean or is there something I can put in the tank to help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I live in UK so may not be able to buy things over here you get in USA or Canada.

Your tank is over stocked the only solution is to reduce the number of fish, Fantails are known to produce lot of dirt and need larger aquarium.

This is because your tank is extremely overstocked. 21 liters is roughly five gallons. A single fancy goldfish requires 20 gallons. As you have seen they are very dirty fish, and that space is needed for the fish to be healthy and grow.

It is also incorrectly stocked. You have mixed cold water fish with tropcial fish who require a heater.

i have a black mystery snail in my gold fish tank that keeps everything in it clean.they are cheap and get to 5cm wide
