through customs each way? I assume that I go through customs at DC and Athens going out and Athens and DC returning to the United States, but please let me know if I'm wrong.

you don't go thru customs leaving USA (except they might do a spot check for people carrying $10k+ without declaring). Yes, you will go thru Greek customs in Athens on the way in...again, not on the way out, and yes, in DC when you arrive
