the guy has taken the car off another guy who owes him money as payment for the debt. he has now sold the car to me but says i will have to use a v5 to get the logbook. i am worried about the car being a write off and wonder how i can find out the date of the accident and if it was repaired ok, the car is taxed and mot'd. so i am hoping it will be ok. if anyone can advise i would be very grateful

cat c is not usually major damage and will have had an identity check before log book is reissued.
If you have the green V5/2 you can apply to get log book in your name with that without having to pay the fees. you can also use this to tax the car.
download form from dvla site or get one from post office.
If you are worried about the repair take it to mot station to go through it or get AA or similar inspection done.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Get in touch with the DVLA in Swansea all the details will be there. BUT if I were you, I would be concerned at Driving a write off car, because the Insurance did not write it off for nothing,.

Could you lend me a thousand-foot long pole? So that I can NOT TOUCH this deal with one?

The DVLA advises you NOT to buy a car with no log-book. A log-book is needed to tax the car, and prove ownership... don't walk away, RUN AWAY!
