I have att internet on my laptop. How can I change it to my desktop?

My son-in -law has a laptop with wireless internet service from att. He does not know what kind of wireless account it is. Windows crashed on it (no longer will boot) so I loaded Linux on it on a USB flash drive. He can click on the connection Icon and it will give a list, including att, which is shown locked. He can enter his password and connect, though the connection is very weak (1 bar) (all the wireless accounts listed are only one bar). When I loaded Linux and connected through my wireless network it was fast and dependable. He can connect, but usually looses the connection when he tries to go to some particular URL. My question is, Can he, by installing a wireless card in his desktop computer, still connect, or does the laptop have some special card that allows him to connect.
