I have an xbox 360 arcade and it won't let me play halo reach why?

I have a 250 mb memory card. When I put the disc in it says I have to update it so I go to update it and it says I have to delta some stuff for more room and when I do I go to play and It won't let me..... Please help I just bought it and and I don't want it to be a waste of money
