I have an open connection on my xbox but with halo 3 i cant join my friends partys

or there games plZ help? I recently connected my xbox 360 to my brothers laptop because she is always on it and i want to play my xbox 360 qhile she is on her laptop but it wont let me connect to my friends games or join partys. Whenever i try to join it says i may have uncompatible connection and that i have an open NAT. How do i fix this. I dont want to connect to the modem directly.
