The alert can not be turned off in the alert menu. I turned off the multimedia, text, voice-mail etc. and it still BEEPS every time an email is received. It sounds like a dead battery in a smoke detector. I called Verizon and the techs just scratched their heads and said, "sorry we couldn't help you today".
