I have an IPhone with Orange running version 3.1.3 can this version be unlocked? i'm

getting confusing answers? I'm on an 18 month contract and want to unlock the phone (iphone 3gs), which is expensive given that its on orange and running 3.1.3 but if i do unlock my iphone and then put another sim in (02) for example can they block the phone with the EMEI code and put it out of use?
