i have an exercise question?

I am in a construction class at my school and I get sort of embarrassed when the teacher tells me to go get something and i cant lift it. so i want to start some kind of work out where i can increase my strength. unfortunately I am kind of skinny and don't have much muscle. so my question is i want to increase my strength so i can lift a considerable amount so
1. what kind of work out would i need to do?
2. what specific areas would i work on to become stronger?
