The AC is usually turned on or off with a push button switch. Switching the air flow from floor to defroster is usually done with sliding lever and wire controls. Look carefully at the lever and temperature controls to see if the wire is connected to open and close the door flaps between defroster and heater. Try operating the temperature controls with the A/C turned off.
