...opposite rear ones? The mechanic says I must replace the rear shock with any front one. For example, the right front correponds with the left rear. Is this true? Its now an $1100.00 job due to the front shocks/struts leaking and having to replace the rears as well because they are connected somehow. Is this really true? Feeling ripped off.

If your 4 Runner is 2003 and newer it has what Toyota calls Xreas? suspension. What this means the shocks diagonally opposite are hydraulically linked to prevent body lean when cornering. As the inside shock is unloaded due to cornering, the opposite shock is loaded, this helps the SUV corner flatter and help eliminate the possibility of a rollover, along with the stability control.
Unfortunately your mechanic is correct.

If a shock is soft and/or leaking, replace it. If it is not leaking and damps rebound the way it should, leave it alone. Your mechanic is a wallet vampire. I do not believe what he is saying. Get your hands on a Chiltons Auto Repair manual and see if what he told you is true or not. It may be if your car has computerized stability control.
