the oil in the lower unit is clear.? No water in the lower unit. Outboard seems to run just fine. But there was about 3 tablespoons of thick brown oil under the outboard coming from the exhaust outlet at the prop. Any ideas?

What you are seeing is what's left after the engine has burnt the mixed
fuel.If you do a lot of trolling you will see lots of this.I have found that if you run a product called power tune (made by quicksilver for mercury)
through the engine when you see lots leaking out ,this will help clear it up.Over time you will get a lot of this building up in the engine and you will loose power and it will idle poorly.Using the power tune will help to clean this out.I use it all the time and it works great. There are steps to follow when using it so be sure to read the label.Hope this helps and good luck.

This is exhaust residue, carbon, oil, and water mixed together. make sure you are using good quality TWC3 oil mixed at a ratio of 50:1.
