I recently bought a second hand Ford Focus car that came with only one key fob and I've been told that there should have been two. The key fob I have in my possesion has three buttons: one for locking the doors another for unlocking the doors and a third for unlocking the boot.

Questions 1
Is it possible to get a replacement key fob like the one I already have and then re-program them both so that this missing second key fob will be unable to unlock or start the car?

I have a copy of the manual and it says that key copies can be made by the Ford dealer OR myself but it's not clear if it just copies the old key code or can generates a new key code. which leads me to another question: Is the code given to the key by the car or is the code given by the car to the key? What I think I need (please correct me if I'm wrong) is a brand new code for all my keys so that the lost second key is prevented from opening and starting my car.

The answer I got from the Ford dealership was unclear but a suggestion was made that £78 pounds would be needed to reprogram the key and more money needed to buy a second one. I think that's outrageous.

Can anyone offer any advice on this subject? My big concern is that the person who sold me the car may be holding onto one of those keys and that makes my car vulnerable. I have since taken extra precautions to secure the car further but I would still like to change the key code.

Can you program the keys with a NEW code or does the system only allow you to make more keys with the same code?
