He loses $197

100 + 79 + 18 = $197

$100 for paying back the liquor store
$79 he gave to the con artist for change (100 - 21 retail dollars)
$18 the wholesale value of the cigarettes

I know the answer i just want to see how many of you can get it, i'll put the answer up later in additional details.

A con artist walks into a tobacconist and buys a packet of cigarettes for $21. The merchant paid the wholesale price of $18 for them.
The con pays the merchant using a FAKE $100 note, for which the merchant has insufficient change so he goes to the liquor store next door and recieves $100 REAL in exchange for the fake note.
The merchant then gives the con artist his change (in real dollars).
But after this the liquor store find out the note is a fake, so the merchant is forced to pay them back $100 REAL.

How many REAL dollars does the merchan lose/gain in this series of transactions?

p.s. this one got the better of my 4 unit math's teacher

con artist gain $21 in cigs and $79 in cash, from his fake dollars. the merchant gain a fake $100 and was cheated out of $18 in cigs and $79 in cash.

total lost = $97
lost in cash = $79
not sure which one you want.
