I have a regular TV with a DVD/VCR Combo and the DVD picture is too dark.?

I have a tv with a dvd/vcr combo and when I watch dvd's the picture is really dark, but when I watch videos it isnt. I have the tv brightness set at full and yet it has no effect on dvds. I have the same problem with my Playstation 2, Xbox, Gamecube systems. I havent found any ways to increase the brightness on those either. Anyone have any ideas?
