I have a question about stick shift car?

I just got a manual transmission car and need help learning it.

So for first gear I know that you must press the clutch and the gas in at the same time for it to start rolling.

But say I was going to shift into 2nd gear. Can I do this?
- Press on the clutch
-Shift into second gear
-THEN press on the gas

Or should I
-Press on the clutch
-Shift into second gear and gas at the same time while slowly letting go of the clutch
(which is basically repeating the steps you do in first gear)
