I have a PlayStation 2 and it will only play in black and white? How am I to fix this?

I have tried switching out the cables. I have tried jiggling them to see if they'd at least get color. I have tried seeing if they're secure. Everything. I have had my boyfriend look at it and take it apart. The best thing he said it went bad. It's a slim PlayStation 2 so obviously something's wrong with the slim ones. They don't have a fan instead they have a heat sink which probably causes them to overheat easier.
