i have a loud windeing noise in the motor compartment of my 1997 jeep cherokee?

i have a 1997 jeep cherokee loredo 4.0..i turned it on this morning and it make a very loud windeing noise..it wasnt the belt or alternator or starter..it was xcomming from the distributor cap..i put my hand on it and i could feel it windeing badly..anyone ever heard of this or know what that might be?
