I have a Honda Civic DX 1343cc. What is the fastest engine I can put in it?

I have a Honda Civic DX 1343cc M reg (94 I think). I am happy with the car at the moment but would like to put a faster engine in it soon. I've been told a Civic 1.6 Vtec Vti engine was the best I could put in but not sure.
