i already have a well established aquarium that i have had for about 6 months. i just got a 15 gallon one. i took about 5 gallons from my other one and put it in this one and then added some new water to it. i also got a few artificial plants from the already established aquarium. i also have some sand that is supposed to have beneficial bacteria already in it. How long should i wait before i put in my cichlid (this is only temporary until it gets big, so i don't want comments about the size of the tank)

you still might wanna wait a little, maybe a little less than a week. but it sounds like you know what your doing, so good job. best of luck!

At least 48 hours so everything can get going and the beneficial bacteria can build up on everything. It would be smart to toss a tad of food in to get the bacteria going.

It was very smart of you to add things from the other tank because it will already hold beneficial bacteria and spread it to the rest of the tank.

You're doing good so far on cycling the tank, also consider using some of the filter media in the new one, as well as this will be covered in beneficial bacteria. In fact, switching the original filter to the new tank very nearly negates cycling at all.
Just be aware the longer you wait with no waste input the more likely you are to start losing the bacteria, it needs the ammonia waste the fish produce keeps them alive, in an empty tank, they'll start to die.
I'd probably toss in some fish food to feed the bacteria for the first 24-48 hours before placing him in. This'll keep the bacteria alive but allow the tank to settle before you place him in.
Best of Luck!
