I have a few questions about the Myki card system....?

I just need to know a little about the Myki card. I'm 15 years old and I need to travel by public transport this year and i don't exactly understand the Myki system. do we have to pay $7 weekly or is that just a start up fee and you can top it up where evver you go? and are there myki top up system thingos at every train station? overall is it efficient and better than the metcard??
