i have a few blackberry questions?

so im going to get the blackberry bold, and i have TONS of friends who have a blackberry and said that when you put in their bb pin, that it allows you to send free text messages to them or something like that around those lines, is that true? and for those who have a blackberry, what other benefits do you get when using it and communicating with friends.
