I have a dodge stratus the engine light. Sometime it will go off then come back on.?

It is best to take the car to a place that has the OSD reader to give you a sure diagnosis. I also had this problem with my Dodge Stratus (1996 with 2.0 L Engine). There were several causes.
One time I didn't tighten the oil filler cap on the engine enough.
Another time I had a defective spark plug
A third time the coil pack started to go bad (also had problems accelerating on very cold days and going up big hills on very cold days).

Fortunately they all were easy and inexpensive to fix.

Take it to Autozone and tell them your check engine light is on and they will diagnose it for free just so they can sell you the part(s). The way you explained the light going on and off , it sounds like the EGR valve... and most of the time you can just clean this part and if it is the EGR get a gasket to put it back on after you clean it. You never know for sure what sensor it is until it is diagnosed...
The check engine light is not for tune-ups. It is to let you know one of the sensors is clogged or gone bad. The long period of going without a tune up could have contributed to carbon build up in your sensors. Make sure to do proper maintenance on your car to keep repair cost down.

if you are near a auto zone or similar, stop by and have them check it out.(for free)it could be a number of reason's light comes on.

When the check engine light comes on, you can always take it to Advance Auto Parts (maybe so other places as well, I'm not sure). They'll check it out for free and give you a printout of the possible reason the light might be on. Also, check all your fluids and make sure that after you get gas, the gas cap is screwed on properly. Those could also cause the light to come on at seemingly random times.
