i have a debate tomorrow and this is about are you in favor of phasing out the jeepneys? and my answer should be yes i agree to phasing it out and i need explanation about it. please answer. thank you
my teacher divide us in to 2 groups the first groups need to agree about it that the jeepneys will be phasing out and the other group need to disagree they did not want to phase it out. and i belong to the group that we agree to it to phase it out. please give me some explanation so that we can answer smartly. thank you

I agree with phasing both jeepney and the godawful belching buses on all major roads. The drivers are mostly undisciplined, and it's waste of gasoline for every single vehicle that's stuck in traffic because of them.

But before that can happen other mode of transportation need to be in place. First, while there's already LRT 1 and 2, and the MRT, those trains won't be enough to accommodate everyone if jeepneys and buses are phased out quickly. Secondly, there are still lots of roads without direct access light rail or other good alternatives: for instance, the lengths of Shaw Blvd, Ortigas Ave., anywhere in the vicinity of Libis, Antipolo, Quezon Avenue, Araneta Ave., Tandang Sora, Commonwealth, Ayala, Buendia from beginning to end, the Fort, Roxas Blvd, Quirino Ave., Sucat, and a host of other major thoroughfares.

Well you have to look at it from alot of angles. What impact both positive and negative will happen if jeepney's are to be removed from the road? If they were to be taken of the roads sure the air pollution would be less and traffic would be smoother but thats about it. There are alot more negative impacts than you may realise. First of all how else will people get to their destinations on relatively low costs? Not everyone can afford taxi's right? Second some certain taxes would go up since there would be a huge demand for cabs and trains. Third the time and money lost by not only the government but the people from everyone not being able to get to their jobs on time. What good are offices, shopping centre's or factories worth if their staff can't get there to keep the country moving? If you were in favour of phasing out jeeps then how would you propose the masses get to their destinations?

So much you need to consider. I would go more for the one that will get you a better mark. I would go for against as you can argue for longer and make yourself sound smarter.

If we take the above answer...phase out jeepney's and replace them with a modern tranportation system...an MRT/LRT that's goes everywhere above ground....a modern city bus sytem with more designated stops..then add in a devoted bicycle lane throughout Metro and QC..inviting the public to ride bikes and get the health benefits that go with that.

Jeepney drivers to be re-employed, working for the new train system.

They should not be phased out...but they must be STRICTLY regulated.

By that I mean, there should be a:

- set maximum number that can ply the streets (possible cut the total number to 25% of the present number)
- all must pass the most stringent pollution control measures (have catalytic converters and working mufflers)
- all drivers must pass a very strict commercial driver training course (they break the law they lose their license permenently)

For me, I would also want jeepneys to be phased out, but not without a good transportation alternative especially in Metro Manila. We should learn from cities like Munich, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc. that have good transportation system and links (combination of train, subways, trams, buses). Jeepneys are not anymore economically viable as a medium of transport, for one, it only can accommodate a few, the engines used are refurbished and not eco-friendly. We should be looking at ways to reduce our carbon footprint to help mother nature and fight global warming. In certain areas, there are also a lot of jeepneys servicing the same route, causing traffics. So there are lot of things to do and a lots of will power from all sectors to make this happen.

HTH!
