I have a crazy bike mod idea, should I?

My cousin gave me his old bike so other people could ride along with me. It's a cheap 24" NEXT bike, of the type you can pick up from Wal-Mart for under $90 new.

Same type, not actually mine.

For various reasons, most of it going back to being a cheap Wal-Mart bike, and possibly it's size, most people don't actually want to ride it.

Here's what I'm thinking about doing:

1st - strip it to the frame, sand it down and repaint it. I have an extra pair of pedals that have never been used (these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0041X625E/ref=oss_product ) so I'm thinking about painting it to match and putting my own company logo on it.

2nd - I want to do away with derailers and the like. I'm thinking about putting a seven speed Shimano gear hub on it. Yes, I know I could buy two of these bikes for the cost of the gear hub. http://www.amazon.com/Nexus-Inter-7-Hub-SG-7R46-36h/dp/B001GSSOTY I have never respoked a wheel, but I figure it's a good start. (of course I'll replace the front sprocket with a single speed)

3rd - put good quality brake components on and new tires. Probably a new seat.

Do you think it would be worth the effort on a project or just a complete waste of money? Do you think it's the kind of thing a hipster would want? Any answer is fine with me, I'm going to keep riding my Diamondback Lucky 24, but I like working on bikes and it's an idea that crossed my mind.
