I have a chemistry question guys.

What is the name of the substance that makes a compound alkaline?

I was wondering is it "hydroxide" or something else?

anything with OH- in its formula turns substances alkaline. This ion is called hydroxide ion. the more the ion is in a compound the more alkaline the compound will be.

An alkali is a special kind of base. A base is a proton acceptor- whereas an acid is a proton donor. This is why they neutralize each other. A base can be any kind of proton acceptor, but an alkali must contain OH- ions. An OH ion is also known as a hydroxide ion.
