my betta fish is always at the bottom of the tank and when it tries to swim its like his tail cant get lifted up and so it is always pulling him down it seems. and it is like he is dead at the bottom of the tank cause he hardly moves cause of his tail it seems what can i do? and do you know why this is happening? it just started within like the last month or two and we have had it for like 6-8 months

My betta is doing the same thing, they are one of the few fish that can become depressed. Try buying a female betta and putting in the tank with him. Give him a couple of months of eating and socializing and he'll be ok :-)

how big is the tank
is it filtered
is it heated

DO NOT GET A FEMALE
they will most likely fight

I have heard bettas can get depressed. Do you have any real plantes in the tank? I would get 2 real plants one being java moss and if you don't have a heater get one they love their water warm at a constant 78F - 80F

Or he could be constipated, or both

Bettas let you know their feelings really well. Try rearranging the tank, or putting a different background on his tank. Even changing the location, from one corner of a room to the next makes a difference.

Most times bettas hang out on the bottoms of their bowls/tanks/what-have-you. They go into a "sleep" mode and sink. If you swish your hand in there, he would be more lively (but you may scare the poor guy).

JUST DO NOT GET HIM A BUDDY. Male or female, betta fish will fight each other. Even if they are in different tanks, if they can see each other they will get aggravated.
