i have a beta fish and i thinks it sick can you help?

i have a 1 or so year old beta fish also known as a Japanese fighting fish, and it is all swelled up , only swimming on the tops of the water and has wat looks to be a small hole in its side. my brothers fish did something like this and a week later it died, and ive realized my fish has been more like this over the course of a few days. wat wrong with my fish? and is there any thing i can do to make him better?

there is TONS you can do for a sick fish.

first, how are you keeping him...
bowl or tank and what size is it?
filtered?
heated?
how often do you change the water and how much water do you change?

is the hole red, white, or more like a dent in his normal skin?
can he/does he try to swim down?
is he discolored?

first thing to do is change half the water while disturbing him as little as possible. if you have aquarium salt I suggest you add some, follow the directions on the box.
 
Im really sorry about your fish...I don't know what is wrong but theres not really much that you can do for a fish. If its eating great, if its not theres a big probolem. Fish are really hard to fix in a probolem and theres not always much that you can do :(
