typically issues like this are due to leaks in the intake or PCV system. Usually some part of the intake has fallen off or cracked. I had a Volvo do the same thing when the lid to the airbox (where the air cleaner goes) wan't seated correctly. Otherwise have it scanend for codes (they may be there even if the light isn't on) to see if you can learn anything.
