I have a 95 buick Riviera, what does engine stutter during acceleration mean?

I have a 95 buick that has slow acceerleration when you press the gas. In addition the harder you press the gas the engine stutters. The check engine light comes on and off. I was thinking (or hoping) this was a wire or filter issue. Any ideas?
