I have a 92' Ford Taurus station wagon, when I started it and let it idle, it rumbled

then died.? When I started it again it did the same thing. I am not mechanically inclined so I have no idea what is wrong with it. But I have had a friend look at it and know it is not the alternator or starter.
Before I take it to the mechanic I want to have some idea what is wrong with it, so I don't get ripped off.
