i have a 2009 Honda civic ex automatic and was wondering what the i-vtec engine does?

also i have another question that does not relate to the i-vtec, i heard a thump from my engine when i started my car, but haven't heard it since this morning, i was just wondering if anyone knew what it could be.... but my main question is what/how the i-vtec engine works in my car
