I have a 2006 Mercury Milan (Ford Fusion) V6 With A "Sulfated" Battery?

The other day I tried to start my car and I thought the battery died.
My neighbor was in a hurry but said I had a "sulfated" battery which I understand to be the blue flakes around the positive connection.
Should I try to fix this problem first b/f replacing my battery.
He took his gloved hand and tried to scrape away the "crud" and it did start (slowly) but he saved me a tow truck charge.
Should I try to finish the maintenance as he suggested or pay $150 to get a new battery.
That's a lot of money I don't really have to spend.
