The guy I had working on it said he spent $500 for a brake bleeder valve and an axle bolt. Does that sound right? Thanks!

ouch $500 is extreme for that repair, he can't charge you for it unless you authorized it.

yes we hear you, you have a mazda3 with a manual trans.
A brake bleeder would cost about $10 and the axle bolt{never heard of this} can not be anything more than a complete axle@$100 second hand. I am sorry to say that you may have been burgled
