I have a 2003 Toyota Matrix with engine light on. Told I need new Catalytic

Converter @ cost of $1,700...? I need a smog for my registration and I won't pass with light on. What should something like this cost? What are my options? Any help is appreciated.
 
I looked it up at AutoZone, there are a couple models but it looks like a cat converter is between 350 and 400 bucks for that car depending on the model etc.
 
I drive a 98 Toy Camry, and I am going to need a catalytic convertor as well. The dealership service dept gave me a quote of 1450 plus labor, so it'll be about 1700. It's one of those things that need to be done. Luckily my inspection is not until next year so I can put it off for a while.

Maybe shop it around and see if you get a better deal on labor costs?
