you can remove the belt completely .
then check the tensioner for wear.
if the water pump was bad it would be leaking.

go for the tensioner.

My 2003 Ford Expedition is making a strange noise. The sound is coming from the front of the motor (V8) and increases with RPM's. I've replaced the alternator, but it still makes the noise. The vehicle doesn't seem to be affected by the noise, but it's driving me crazy...it sounds just like a power steering problem, yet my power steering works fine and has plenty of fluid. There are no leaks....could it be a bearing in the pully tensioner for my surpentine belt? Water pump? I need to get rid of the noise!!! What should I check?
The sound is there from the time I start the truck until I turn it off. It's more of a humming sound than a squeeling sound. Seems like a bearing might be going out.
