I have a 2002 chevy 1500 4x4 with the 4.8 v-8 if I gut the cats will it hurt my mpg?

thanks for all the answers there very helpful when i cut them off i have to leave the front 02 sensors but can take the back ones off correct i am new to all this but would like to understand better.
