My battery light was lighting on and off...so I asked the mechanic to see if its the alternator or battery...anyways he replace the alternator and gave me an oil change which is fine...but when I asked him for price it ended up to be $440 labour and tax included...is this a fair price?

yes this sounds about right, a normal alternator repair will run you about 350-400 at a shop, an oil change could have run the next 40 so i dont think your getting too ripped off

Do you have 100,000 miles or more on this car??? Your big mistake was not taking the car to an Auto Zone or other store where you can watch them test your charging system, FOR FREE!!!! I think you got burned. Sometimes all that is required is a thorough cleaning of your engine compartment with a power spray at a local do-it-yourself place. If your alternator DID go bad, make sure that it wasn't from a leaking valve cover gasket. Sometimes, if oil leaks from here, it will coat your alternator and burn it up. In other words, keep your engine compartment showroom clean at all times!!! You would be amazed how much happier your car will be. If I were you, I would only be using 100% synthetic oil in this car, like ELF or Mobil One. Your car was exquisitely engineered by people who really understand technology. Your car deserves the finest treatment. Good Luck!!! I hope you are using only a genuine Toyoat battery. I also hope that you are using only genuine Toyota fluids, that come right from the dealer (like coolant and brake fluid) Not to do so will cause you trouble on down the road. Happy motoring!!!
