Hi, I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4L and am having a bear of a time getting it started. I have checked the relays, the battery, cleaned the starter lead contacts, took off the starter and had it tested at the local auto-zone where it tested fine, and checked the volts on the starter positive lead which was a strong 12-14 volts. What happens is when I turn the key, I hear the ignition relay click and that's it. Starter isn't cranking or anything. I've tried jiggling the shifter (it's an automatic), putting it in neutral, etc. to no joy.
The funny thing is it will occasionally start. When it does start, it starts up strong and fine. I'm thinking I have 2 more options to check before I drive this beast into Lake Michigan: 1) the starter solonoid may have corroded disks and so if I short from the positive to the negative post it would bypass that solonoid and fire the starter. 2) The NSS might be bad.
Am I missing anything at all here? Are there any other possible issues? TIA
