I have a 1998 Honda CRV that I bought from my mother-in-law, she told me...

...there was a problem with the heater? that when you turn the thermostat from cold to warm, a toxic mist fills the air that comes from the heater vents. I was driving home from buying it from here and I tried it, it was 20 degrees and I was freezing, well it happened, and I quickly rolled the window down but not soon enough as I felt like a stoner teenager again. I had to pull over... Ok so my question is, what was that and how do I fix it, I need heat bad!! I was told it was freon, but if I have my freon drained will it be safe to run my heater. I don't plan on using the A/C at all...Please help!
if it helps, the mist turns the windshield black on the inside and it is a pain to get off!!
