Start engine check output voltage at alternator should be 13.5 to approx 14.2 if its the same as battery its bad make sure all cables are tight and corrosion free

Yes as the person above stated is right, you dont want to ohm out a battery you would want to check the DC voltage of the battery, thats a different indicator on the meter.

1) with the car off check battery voltage -put the black lead on the neg battery cable and the red lead on the positive battery cable--should be 12-12.8volts

2) then crank the car put the leads of the volt meter the same way , you should then read 13.8-14.6 volts

If 1) is read properly your battery is good if not bad or dead cell in battery

If 2) is reading below 13.5 or you still read the 12 battery volts then your regulator inside the alternator is bad.

OH yeah almost forgot check fuses first also there is an inline on some cables and fuses under the hood in the fuse block, check them all, also could be a broken or loose wire from the alternator to the battery, so check those also and corrosion free connections like Jim said, before ruling in a bad alternator,....
