was driving what could cause this? I have a 1998 chevy suburban that was back firing then quit working while i was driving what could cause this?
it was running fine then earlier today I noticed it smelled a bit hot, while I was out just before it quit I stopped at the store and it was smoking, I decided to try to make it home and after just 2 miles it was backfiring it did that for a minute then quit. started back up when less than a mile back fired and quit again. I knew the O 2 sensor was going out and a power steering hose had a slow leak but i kept fluid in it and it was running fine.
what should I do other than call a mechanic LOL my husband can do repairs if I can tell him what it is needs done we have a book but I am not even sure where to start.
*thinking about it it may have been spraying a bit because it was kinda wet when I opened the hood, and smelled a bit of antifreeze. I did not check the radiator yet will do that tomarrow
*it had never backfired at all before now, and I can only guess that the sound was I was hearing was a back fire at first I thought the muffler was falling off. but i have never had a vehicle do that before,
*the gages all read fine. did not register any problems.
* the fuel filter has less than 2000 miles on it.
* It has had regular oil changes and when we do them we check/change the air filter.
