I have a 1997 Ford Explorer - Alarm system is not working and I can not start car?

I have a built in alarm system - that is wired to the ignition. Meaning - you have to hit the alarm system OFF / Unlock button twice to cut the alarm off to crank the car. I got home yesterday - and Cut the car off, locked it like normal, and came inside. I went to start it later, and the alarm had no sound at all, you hit the panic, lock, unlock button - nothing. The lights would flash, but nothing else. SO - the alarm is not cutting on nor off - and I can not crank the car. Any suggestions?
