i just purchased sts and for regular maintenance and up keep what would be the best type of oil and should i use a 5w30 or a higher one like 10w40 she has 263 ks on it but she does runs good, winter is right around the corner and i live in Canada actually southern ontario where our winters are damp and cold, and using a thicker oil for a vehicle like this in cold winters like mine, is it harder on the engine when it is a cold start in the morning? thank you for taking time to read this and thanks for all your answers..........

manufacture recommended to use 5W30 because precision bearings inside of your engine so don't use any thing heavier than that. it's not good for it. on cold weather you need to use the same or 5W20 to protect your engine, remember the colder weather will cause the oil thicker than warm weather. i am a A.S.E master mechanic with more than 30 year of sweat and headache

The engine in your Caddy was designed to use 5W30,No matter how many miles.Using heavier weight viscosity may have worked on older worn engines. But not true on the tolerances used on clearances of internal parts these days.
Some oil passages are as small has a straight pen, thick oil will not hardly pass through.

i wouldn't use straight 30w it causes engine sludge like you wouldn't believe, go with 5w30

I have used 10w30 in the winter and 10w40 in the summer in all my vehicles and never had a problem. 92 Dodge b350 with over 500k , 92 tempo with over 480k and I also live in Toronto. I also lived in Thunder Bay for several years and still used the same type oil, even when the temps dropped to -30c. Higher mileage motors do not need a thinner oil
Just don`t use a cheap oil . We worked in northern Alberta for a few years as well and never went below a 10w30 oil in our fleet vehicles , even at -40. Just give it a few minutes (5-10) to warm up in cold weather before driving off
