i have a 1992 honda prelude. it says it only takes premium gas?

do you really only put premiuim gas in a 1992 prelude? what if you put regular wat will happen??

and since my gas meter is electronic i never really got it down to like one bar im scared it might run out. when does that low gas signal light up?? i never seen it light up before?
 
Use regular gas if you can't afford premium, all cars wish we could afford premium and my gas light comes on when I am down to 1/8 tank or so, it's not good to let it get too low on older cars cause if you have sediment in the gas tank it will get sucked up and you will end up with a clogged fuel line or fuel filter. Now, if you can afford premium gas, go for it.
 
High octane fuel is always recommended in high performance engines. If you don't think you can afford the premium fuel fill it up once with midgrade and see if you notice any performance degradation and listen for spark knock. If it seems to run fine with midgrade use it.

You can run the same experiment and step down again to regular. if there is no noticable difference you'll be fine running the lower grade fuels.

As far as the gas guage is concerned I would not run it too low. Older cars tend to gather sludge and dirt in the bottom of the gas tank and you don't want the fuel pump to start sucking crap into the fuel delivery system when the tank gets too low. Keep the car full or at least never go below 1/4 tank to keep that crud out of your engine.
