I have a 1991 Dodge Dakota, 6 cyl. 2 wheel dr. with a problem?

The vehicle will run fine in park but unless I rev the engine it dies when I put it in gear or when moving when I step on the brake to stop. It is an automatic, 6 cylinder, 2 wheel drive. What is the most likely cause of this problem?
