i have a 1988 ford f-150 camper special and need more info?

i have camper special with a 5.0 liter v8 im only getting 8-10 mpg but i have 31 inch tires on it so im wondering if i should get tall and narrow tires cuz it says online im suppose to get 14-17 mpg but my truck needs a leaf spring bushing rotors and drums and i have a leak in the transmission pan anyone have any info if i should keep the truck or not thanks
