I have a 1969 chevy c10 1/2 ton pick up and I had a question about the head lights?

this is a 69 chevy c10 pick up and the head lights were not working on it, a mechanic told me to change the dimmer switch and I did, the driver side light was Petty low so I played with the ground for a bit and both lights came Right on but after having the lights on for a while they began to create something what appeared to be a clear smoke inside of them and now they don't work, could someone please let me know what could be wrong

is there any possible way that the ground caused this ?

or could it be that I have a short somewhere ?
